As a real estate professional, Nelldra Allen understands the importance of home ownership in building generational wealth and stability.

Nelldra recently sat down with Barron J. Damon for his podcast, "Giving While Black," to discuss why she has dedicated herself to providing educational and financial support for first-time home buyers through her and her husband's nonprofit, "Purposefully Covering the Gap." Nelldra uses her professional success to make an impact on the lives of those in her community.

Becoming a Real Estate Agent

Nelldra's path to becoming a prominent real estate agent began when she and her husband, Brian, decided to upgrade their home. Little did they know that a Groupon class initially intended to guide them through the process, would lead Nelldra down a completely different career path.

The couple bought their first home when she was 22, and as the market recovered from the 2008 recession, they decided to upgrade it. Her husband found a class on Groupon that he believed would guide us. Turns out, it was a real estate agent course. 

Though not originally intending to become an agent, Nelldra completed the course and began assisting family members. Gradually, it grew, and she is now a full-fledged real estate agent in Atlanta with a million-dollar badge that symbolizes the value of her annual sales.

Nelldra's story is not just about professional success; it's also about her unwavering commitment to giving back to her community. Her story exemplifies the idea that philanthropy isn't restricted to grand gestures or vast resources; it's about giving from the heart, regardless of the amount.

Supporting Home Buyers in Reaching a Dream

Real estate has amplified her capacity to give, but Nelldra has always been a giver. After a Dave Ramsey class, which highlighted the significance of giving in a structured manner, she and her husband have focused on giving back to the community not just monetarily but also in terms of time and resources.

This commitment to giving back led Nelldra and her husband to establish a nonprofit organization called "Purposefully Covering the Gap." The name itself encapsulates the organization's core mission — bridging the gap in homeownership with purpose. 

Nelldra recognized that many Black and Hispanic families faced challenges in pursuing homeownership, often due to a lack of education and generational trauma associated with homeownership. Moreover, financial barriers, such as down payments, posed significant obstacles.

The nonprofit provides micro grants to multiple families at different stages of the home-buying process and offers educational resources. Applicants are expected to have the majority of their closing funds or down payment, but the organization steps in to bridge the gap if there is a small deficit.

Importance of Home Ownership

Homeownership plays a pivotal role in building generational wealth, and yet, systemic barriers have historically hindered Black and Hispanic communities from achieving this dream. By debunking misconceptions and offering education, her nonprofit aims to empower more individuals to become homeowners and bridge the wealth gap.

Nelldra believes the Black community has always had a focus on extending a helping hand where needed, but the term "philanthropy" gives more weight to the activity. What sets her philanthropic journey apart is her emphasis on intentionality and purpose. She firmly believes that philanthropy is not about the quantity of giving but the intention behind it. 

Nelldra Allen's philanthropic journey is a testament to the idea that ordinary individuals can make an extraordinary impact. She reminds us that philanthropy is not limited to grand gestures but is deeply rooted in our culture of giving and supporting one another, especially in times of need.
